PERIMETERS AND CONVERTING UNITS

When you convert larger units to smaller units, you multiply.

Convert yd. into ft., multiply by 3.
There are 3 ft. in one yd..

Convert ft. into in., multiply by 12.

There are 12 in. in 1 ft.

When you convert smaller units into larger units, you divide.

Convert ft. into yd., divide by 3.
1 yd. is the same as 3 ft.

Convert in. into ft., divide by 12.
1 ft. is the same as 12 in.

To find the perimeter of a figure, add up all of the lengths of the sides.
A rectangle measuring 3 yd. by 2 yd. has a perimeter of 10 yd.
If you convert the perimeter to ft... 10 yd. x 3 = 30 ft.
If you convert the perimeter to in... 30 ft. x 12 = 360 in.

You can practice this by measuring items in your home and converting the units.

You can also make up your own figures on paper and practice them.

WARNING
For students who did not leave 3rd grade with multiplication fact mastery, this is very difficult.

Students often understand this new concept of perimeter and converting but if their addition, multiplication and division skills are weak, their answers will be incorrect.

Luckily, you can practice these skills easily at home.
