Spelling & Vocabulary Words

1. bewildered: greatly puzzled, confused

2. homeland: country where one was born

3. longed: wished for, wanted very much

4. marveled: filled with surprise or wonder

5. reminded: made someone remember

6. surrounded: put all around

7. traditional: handed down for generations, usually relating to ideas, customs, or beliefs

8. syllable: a word or a part of a word pronounced as a single sound (the word lunch has one syllable and the word dinner has two); the natural breaks within a word

9. Haiku: A very short, three-line poem that tries to capture the moment. Traditional haiku in the Japanese language always has five syllables in the first line, seven in the second line, and five in the third line. Modern haiku does not always follow those traditional rules but is still usually made of three short lines. They still try to capture a single moment in time.
